Marketplace's Story
Marketplace was painted in the summer of 2017. That year was a bit of a renaissance year for artist, Jolianne Alexander, who painted numerous paintings, which make up a lot of the pieces featured here on Pimento Creations' today. During this year, Jolianne had the concerted intention to develop her Afro-Art collection to one day open up Pimento Creations, and in brainstorming a catalog, Jolianne wanted to incorporate something a "little different."
Marketplace is a unique piece for Jolianne, who typically paints portraits. Marketplace does not feature any faces and is primarily focused on the setting. In fact, the person in the image is unnamed and has no gender. Jolianne spent many hours working on the detail of this piece, including the fruit, the wooden structures, the bird the window, and the overall aesthetic.
While you view this piece, it should be clear that there is fruit and other edible goods surrounding the unnamed person, but what those foods are is left up to your interpretation. In this way, Marketplace truly embodies the style of Pimento Creations--whispering reality, but never voicing its existence. In other words, Pimento Creations' pieces depict the reality Jolianne sees when she closes her eyes and dreams at night.
Hopefully when you admire Marketplace, you will be transported to your own version of imagined reality and be able to appreciate it, even if only you can see it.
